Judge James Reese
Back to All VideosJudge James Reese grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Growing up in a difficult family environment, Judge Reese faced adversity early on, including domestic violence, poverty, and the instability of frequent relocations. Despite these challenges, he found strength in humor, often using it to cope with difficult situations. His mother, a devout Seventh-day Adventist, played a significant role in teaching him resilience and the importance of finding joy in the face of hardship. After high school, Judge Reese’s sister supported him so that he could begin studying at a teacher’s college in New Orleans. He was drafted into the army after a year and a half, where he eventually became an officer despite facing racial discrimination and institutional barriers. His service in the military was pivotal, allowing him to attend law school at the University of Southern California. After volunteering for Charlie Warren’s campaign, Judge Reese was given an appointment setting up free legal services for the underprivileged under the War on Poverty program. His professional journey took him through various roles, from working with Ray Charles Enterprises, to being appointed as a judge of a Municipal Court in Compton, to serving on the Superior Court, and, after twenty years, retiring and working as a private arbitrated mediator. Reflecting on his legacy, Judge Reese expresses gratitude for his life and career, while emphasizing the importance of education in bridging the growing divide between social classes in America.
